ROLLA, Mo. - What's the best way to respond from your first conference loss since 2008? Go out and win the next day. That is what the No. 8 Lewis women's volleyball team did on Saturday evening at Missouri S&T, sweeping the Lady Miners 25-23, 25-14, 25-23.
Senior Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) hit .524 with 12 kills and six block assists. Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) recorded a double-double with 11 digs and 10 kills. Senior Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) provided 37 assists.
Lewis led the first set 18-13 before Missouri S&T knotted it at 18. Missouri S&T took a 23-22 lead, and then the Flyers scored the final three points of the set. Mount had a kill in the final run.
Lewis trailed only once in the second set and didn't fall behind in the third. However Lewis did see the Lady Miners use an 11-point run to knot the set at 22. The match ended when sophomore Mary Carroll (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) delivered a kill off the Missouri S&T block.
"We had a slight hesitation in the start but we had a couple key moments from Danielle that turned the tide and put us in the right direction," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "This match was important to our goal of continuing to improve all season long."
Lewis out-hit Missouri S&T .260 to .125. The Flyers out-blocked the Lady Miners 8.0 to 5.0.
Freshman Katie Lindsey (Jacksonville, Ill./Routt Catholic) provided six kills in the final frame.
"It was nice to see Katie come in and play well in the third set," Smith said.
Lewis improves to 13-2 (5-1 GLVC). Missouri S&T falls to 8-7 (3-3 GLVC). Lewis hosts Northern Kentucky on Friday.
