Quincy, Ill. - The Lewis University men's soccer team secured the number one seed in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, as the Flyers tied Quincy, 0-0 in double overtime, at the North Campus Field on Sunday (Oct. 24) afternoon to capture the GLVC regular-season championship.
The championship is the Flyers' first regular-season title since 2002.
With the tie, Lewis is now 10-5-1 overall and 10-3-1 in GLVC action, while the Hawks are now 10-5-2 on the campaign and 9-4-1 in conference play.
Quincy outshot the Flyers, 13 to seven on the afternoon. Defense was key on Sunday, as there was a combined six shots on goal between both teams for the entire 110 minutes.
Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made three saves, while his counterpart D.J. Lampert stopped two shots for the Hawks.
"If you would have told me (we'd win the regular-season title) after starting 1-3, we'd certainly be toasting ourselves," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "You have to credit our seniors with helping us turn it around by going 9-2-1 over our last 12 games.
"Now we have to get to work and get ready for Indianapolis on Sunday."
Lewis opens GLVC Tournament First Round action on Sunday, October 31st, as the Flyers welcome Indianapolis for a 12 p.m. first kick.
