Men's Soccer: Lewis 2, #4 Northern Kentucky 0 in PDF Format
Highland Heights, Ky. - The Lewis University men's soccer team knew that they were in for a battle on Sunday (Oct. 3) afternoon, as the Flyers had the dubious task of taking on Great Lakes Valley Conference leader and No. 4 ranked Northern Kentucky on their home field.
With the odds stacked against them, the Flyers put their best foot forward, led by a goal by senior forward Armin Vrebac (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem), on their way to the 2-0 GLVC victory, their sixth-straight win, over the Norse at the NKU Soccer Stadium to propel Lewis into sole possession of first place in the conference.
"I'm obviously happy with the clean sheet and it's a good win, but it's just one game" Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "We just have to keep on working and getting after it."
With the win, Lewis improves to 7-3 and 7-2 in GLVC action, while the host Norse, fall to 7-1-2 on the campaign and 5-1-2 in conference play.
The Flyers were first on the board at the 43:53 mark thanks to a Norse own goal. NKU goalkeeper Michael Lavric was caught out of position when a Norse defender tried to clear a loose ball in front of the net. His sliding attempt rolled over the top of his foot and across the goal line for the score.
Vrebac added an insurance tally in the 85th minute, as the Loves Park, Ill., native scored from 10 yards out to the left post to push the Flyers ahead, 2-0. Junior forward Aloiso Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pampulha/Marshalltown C.C.) assisted on the play for his 12th point in the Flyers' last six games.
Lewis sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill.Hoffman Estates) made one save in goal to earn the shutout victory.
Lewis is back in action on Friday (Oct. 8), as they head north to square off with UW-Parkside for a 1:15 PM (CST) first kick.
