Houghton, Mich. - The Lewis University men's tennis team won three out of the first four matches against Michigan Tech and never looked back on their way to their third consecutive win, a 5-4 victory, over the Huskies at the Gates Tennis Center on Sunday (Feb. 14) afternoon.
Lewis won four matches during the entire 2009 campaign.
"It was a great team effort today," Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "For us to have the season that we are striving for, we're going to need contributions from everyone."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 3-0, while the Huskies drop to 3-1 on the campaign.
Sophomore Uno Lapimaa (Tallin, Estonia/Audentese) paired up with junior Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboltschule/Missouri Valley) at No. 1 doubles for the 8-5 win over Michigan Tech's Luka Stupar and Doug Yossida. Lapimaa would take down Stupar with a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles.
Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) was the other Flyer to claim a pair of wins over the Huskies on Sunday. Wojnarowski teamed up with Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) at No. 2 doubles for the 8-6 win over David Heuer and Anders Sandholm. He would later claim the 7-5, 6-3 win over Yossida at No. 4 singles.
Freshman Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) picked up the final
victory for the Flyers at No. 5 singles with the 6-3, 6-1 win over Chris Verhulst at No. 5 singles.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 18), as the Flyers welcome Wayne State to Challenge Fitness for an 8:30 PM first serve.
