WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Thanks to 11 runs in the first inning, Lewis ran over West Virginia Wesleyan 16-5 on Friday morning.
The Flyers added two in the second, one in the eighth and two in the ninth. West Virginia Wesleyan scored four in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Freshman Steve Almanza (Glendale, Ariz./Horizon) started and earned the win for Lewis. He allowed four runs with just one being earned on four hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out three.
Lewis had the same number of hits as runs in the first inning, 11.
Junior Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) hit a three run home run in the first inning. Freshman Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) scored two runs, going 2-for-5. Junior Vince Campagna (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) had two RBI thanks to a 2-for-3 day.
"Today was a great way to end the trip," head coach Tim McDonough said. "We've had a few games offensively lately where we took good swings but weren't getting the results. Today we broke out and it was good to see."
Lewis finishes the Florida trip 8-1.
"We had a good trip but now we need to keep it going," McDonough said.
West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 5-4. Lewis is now 8-5. The Flyers open conference play next weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at Maryville and on Sunday at Missouri S&T.
