Springfield, Mo. - Lewis University's bid for the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's tennis championship fell short on Friday (Apr. 23) night, as No. 20 Drury claimed the 5-1 win over the Flyers at the Cooper Tennis Complex in a GLVC semifinal match.
"Although we were down after we played doubles, I believe we actually played better than this morning," Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "We competed the best we could in singles, but Drury was the better team."
Lewis' lone victory came at No. 1 doubles as sophomores Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) and Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare) teamed up for the 8-4 win over Drury's Ramon Gonda and Ivan Marevic.
With the win, Drury improves to 13-4 and will take on Southern Indiana for the GLVC Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers (16-6) return to action at 9 AM on Saturday to square off with Rockhurst in the third-place match.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 9th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
