Springfield, Mo. - The Lewis University men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Rockhurst in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament third-place match on Saturday (April 24) afternoon at Drury's Cooper Tennis Complex.
The Hawks improve to 8-8 on the year with the third-place finish, while the Flyers are now 16-7.
Lewis sophomore Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) won his 30th singles match of the year with a 7-6 (13-11), 6-0 victory over Rockhurst's Ben Newell at No. 1 singles. Lapimaa later paired up with teammate Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare) for a 9-8 (7-3) triumph over Ben and Zach Newell.
Lewis was also victorious at No. 3 doubles as Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) and Brandon Tilton (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) claimed the 9-8 (7-3) victory over Paulo Bombonatti and Rodolfo Gauto-Mariotti.
Freshman Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) was the only other singles winner for the Flyers as he defeated Zach Newell 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 at No. 3.
"We did well to get up 2-1 after doubles, but we just didn't get the job done in singles," Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said.
