Romeoville, Ill. - The `Friendly Confines' of the Lewis Softball Field have been anything but kind to the Flyers as of late, as Robert Morris earned the 3-0, 2-1 (8 inn.), non-conference doubleheader sweep on Wednesday (Apr. 29) evening.

The Flyers have lost three in a row at home and seven of their last 10 games at Lewis Softball Field.

"We just couldn't do anything mentally or physically right today," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "When you have one run and seven hits in two games, it's awful hard to win."

Lewis junior first baseman Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) and freshman catcher Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) each had two hits total in the doubleheader.

With the sweep, Robert Morris improves to 34-18, while the Flyers drop to 32-14 on the campaign.

In the opener, RMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a squeeze bunt by Ashley Havertine and a RBI groundout by Rina Joy Ramirez. The Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning.

RMU junior pitcher Jennifer Burns claimed the complete-game, shutout win in the opener for the Eagles, as she improved to 14-9 on the campaign. Lewis starting pitcher Allison Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Trinity/Triton) drops to 2-2 on the season, as she allowed two runs and five hits in three innings of work.

In the nightcap, Lewis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI single from sophomore catcher Mary Giancarlo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South). The Eagles would tie the game up in the fifth inning on a RBI single by third baseman Sierra Rhodes.

RMU would break the tie in the top of the eighth inning, as Eagles' first baseman Deanna Vasquez opened the frame with a double. Rhodes would lay down a sacrifice bunt, moving RMU pinch runner Jossilyn Jones over to third base.

Lewis starting pitcher Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) would induce Eagles center fielder Kelly Peterson into a ground ball to Flyer second baseman Kara Harmatys (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport). Harmatys threw home, but her throw was high, allowing Jones to score the go-ahead run, pushing Robert Morris ahead, 2-1.

Habel (15-7) took the complete-game loss for the Flyers, as she allowed two runs and six hits, while striking out five batters. Havertine (14-7) was the winning pitcher, as she allowed one run and three hits, while striking out two batters in eight innings of work.

The Flyers return to action on Sunday, May 2nd, as they welcome Rockhurst to Lewis Softball Field for a 12 PM doubleheader on "Senior Day".

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers more than 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
