ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 9 Drury scored two goals in the first five minutes to grab early momentum in a 3-0 victory over No. 3 Lewis on Sunday afternoon in the Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer opener for both schools.
Matt Hutchison got the Panthers on the board at 1:47 thanks to a throw-in from Alex Palmer. Less than three minutes later, at 4:27, Grant Bowden scored off a header from Peter Higgins for a 2-0 Drury lead.
It stayed 2-0 until Micah Whorton scored at 63:41 from 15 yards out to make the score 3-0.
"Our defense and passing was sloppy," head coach Evan Fiffles said. "But after the first five minutes we did things better in the final 85. We've got a long way to go but we'll turn our focus to next time out."
Drury held a 13-9 edge in shots. Drury improves to 1-1 (1-0 GLVC). Lewis falls to 0-2 (0-1 GLVC).
Senior Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville), senior Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and junior Eduardo Acxer Way (Chicago, Ill./Schurz/Wartburg) each had two shots for the Flyers.
Lewis hosts Maryville on Friday at noon in GLVC play.
