Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University forward
Aloisio Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pampulha) (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pampulha/Marshaltown C.C.) made the most of his final home game at Lewis Stadium, as the Brazil native collected a pair of goals to propel the Flyers to the 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over UW-Parkside on Wednesday (Oct. 26) for 'Senior Night'.
"I thought we came out with energy and created a lot of opportunities tonight," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "Defensively it was pretty much a clean sheet and it was a good all-around performance on both sides of the ball."
With the win, Lewis improves its record to 9-7-1 overall and 9-5-1 in GLVC action. The Flyers have clinched the No. 5 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament and will square off with Quincy at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 29). UW-Parkside ends its season with a record of 7-8-2 and 6-7-2 in conference play.
Barros put the Flyers on the board in the 35th minute, as he took a feed from sophomore
Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) and converted from 12 yards out to give Lewis the 1-0 lead.
Lewis appeared to be heading into halftime with that 1-0 lead, but a Flyer defender was whistled for a hand ball in the box with 26 seconds remaining in the period. UW-Parkside's Niklas Boedts converted the penalty kick to even the score up at 1-apiece at the intermission.
Barros' classmate
Robens Decius (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades) (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades/East Central College) also got into the mix with his fourth goal of the season. Decius took a beautiful cross pass from sophomore
Niall Hoban (Dublin, Ireland/Portmarnock) (Dublin, Ireland/Portmarnock/Colaiste Ide) and knocked it past Rangers' goalkeeper Nick Huftalin to give Lewis the 2-1 advantage at the 49:37 mark.
Barros added an insurance goal in the 74th minute, as Ramirez found him for the second time on the evening extending the Flyers' advantage to 3-1.
Huftalin finished the evening with six saves, while his counterpart, Lewis'
Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) (Mokena, Ill./Providence) stopped five shots.
"It means a lot that our team came out with intensity we needed to win this match,' Barros said. "I think we played one of our best matches of the year."
