EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Behind a .227 to .127 hitting percentage edge, No. 20 Lewis women's volleyball swept Southern Indiana 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 on Saturday afternoon in a match between two of the best teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The win moves Lewis into a tie with Southern Indiana for second place in the GLVC East Division and avenges a loss to Southern Indiana earlier this season.
“Our block, especially on the outside, forced them into some errors,” head coach
Lorelee Smith said.
Lewis out-hit Southern Indiana in each set. The Flyers limited the Screaming Eagles to .029 hitting in the second set and .125 hitting in the third.

Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Eklhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Senior
Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) added 11 kills and six block assists. Lewis was led defensively by sophomore
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills)'s (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) 19 digs. Senior
Kelly McConkey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) added seven digs.
“Kelly and Amy did a nice job at the end of the match of stepping up and making some clutch plays,” Smith said. “Amy had one of her best matches of the season.”
The Flyers grabbed early leads of 7-2 and 11-5 in the first set. Southern Indiana advance within one at 20-19, but Lewis pulled away thanks to a 4-0 run.
Both the second and third set featured nine ties and two lead changes. Lewis' largest run in the final two sets set was only three points; however the Flyers had seven occasions in each frame where they scored two or three straight points.
A Krumwiede and Mount block gave Lewis a 24-23 lead in set three. The Flyers earned point 25 on a ball handling error by Southern Indiana.
The Flyers held a 6-0 edge in service aces. It is the first time in 2011 Southern Indiana has failed to record an ace in a match.
Southern Indiana falls to 18-8. Lewis improves to 21-5. Both teams have identical 13-3 records in the GLVC.
Lewis hosts St. Joseph's on Friday. The Flyers will celebrate Senior Night. The Flyers conclude the regular season on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against Indianapolis. The contest will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television.
