ROMEOVILLE, Ill. –
No. 21 Lewis women's volleyball had 12 players record a kill in the Flyers' 25-21, 25-14, 25-23 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Illinois-Springfield on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena.

The Lewis offense was led by redshirt freshman Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central). She hit .444 with a career-high nine kills in two sets. She also added two blocks (one solo).

“It was nice to see Kim play well,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Her enthusiasm is very contagious and I think it lifted the entire team.”

Redshirt sophomore Vivian Pritz (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township/Edinboro) recorded 28 assists over the final two sets. Sophomore libero Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) continues to impress as she added 16 digs.

Lewis cruised to victories in the first two sets. The third set was the tightest with 18 ties and eight lead changes. UIS led 22-21 when the Flyers asked for time. Junior Jillian Carlberg (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) responded by providing a kill out of the timeout. A UIS kill gave the Prairie Stars a 23-22 advantage before Carlberg delivered another kill to tie it up. Carlberg then went back to serve and nailed an ace that fell just within the backline. UIS asked for time but the break wouldn't freeze Carlberg. She ended the match with another ace.

“Jill showed the ability to step it up in pressure situations,” Smith said. “That will only build her confidence and the team's confidence.”

Lewis out-blocked UIS 7-3.

UIS falls to 3-15 (1-10 GLVC). Lewis improves to 12-4 (7-3 GLVC). The Flyers have won seven matches in a row. Lewis will try to make it eight on Sunday, when they welcome Quincy to Neil Carey Arena. First serve is 1 p.m.
