ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 21 Lewis women's volleyball limited Quincy to a .047 hitting percentage in the Flyers' 25-12, 25-21, 25-18 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The win is Lewis' eighth consecutive victory.
Quincy hit just .031 with 10 kills and nine errors in the opening set. Lewis didn't have a single hitting error in the first set. The difference allowed Lewis to win the frame by 13 points.
Lewis led the second set 15-9 before Quincy knotted it at 18. Down the stretch however the Flyers pulled away with a 5-1 run. Junior
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a kill for point 25.
The third set was the closest, as it featured seven ties and four lead changes. Quincy led 17-16 when the Flyers closed the match on a 9-1 run. Mitros recorded back-to-back aces in the push.
“Colleen and Jen (Krumwiede) both stepped it up from the service line in the third set,” head coach
Lorelee Smith said. “When you can put pressure on the other team with aces or really tough serving it gives your team the chance to breathe and reset; which we needed at that point.”
Mitros finished with nine kills, eight digs, four block assists and three aces. Senior
Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) added nine kills and six blocks (one solo). Sophomore
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) finished with 13 digs.
Quincy falls to 7-9 (4-7 GLVC). Lewis improves to 13-4 (8-3 GLVC).
The Flyers are next in action on Friday at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover held at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. Lewis will not know their opponents for the event until late Sunday evening.
