Lewis Women's Hoops Opens Season With 81-72 Setback At Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Junior Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) led Lewis women's basketball with 19 points in the Flyers' 81-72 season opening loss at Ferris State on Saturday evening.
 
Lewis jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the contest. The game changed with a Ferris State run in the first half when the Bulldogs turned an 8-8 game into a 28-12 Ferris State advantage.
 
“We had a stretch over the last 10 minutes of the first half where we didn't play defense and then we couldn't get in transition,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We can't put ourselves in that type of a hole.”
 
Ferris State shot 55 percent (27-of-49) from the floor while limiting Lewis to 41 percent (26-of-64) shooting.
 
Senior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg) (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg/Eastern Illinois) added 16 points. Freshman Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) added nine points and five steals.

“It may not have shown in the box score but I liked some of the things I saw from the younger players,” Carlsen said. “Jamie did some nice things especially in the second half and Kristen (Itschner) had a nice game.”

Ferris State improves to 1-0. Lewis falls to 0-1. The Flyers host McKendree on Monday in the 2011-12 home opener for Lewis. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
