Lewis women's basketball (0-2) travels to Upper Iowa (0-1) on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. start. The Flyers are looking for their first win of the season after losses to Ferris State and McKendree to start the season.
BLOCK PARTY - The 11 blocks Lewis recorded against McKendree on Monday was the most for a Lewis team during the
Lisa Carlsen era. The 11 blocks also marked the most by a GLVC team in a game since Northern Kentucky recorded 16 against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 14, 2008.
ON THE BLOCKS - Six different Flyers combined to record Lewis' 11 blocks on Monday against McKendree. One Flyer who didn't have a block was junior
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), despite ranking 10th all-time in blocks with 50.
SHE'S A FRESHMAN -
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic), a freshman from Normal, Ill. scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting with three blocks and a steal against McKendree. Her production came in 22 minutes off the bench.
CLEANING UP - Lewis' 18 offensive rebounds against McKendree matches last season's high of 18 against Drury (Jan. 20) and at Quincy (Feb. 17).
FROM WAY DOWNTOWN - Lewis made 11-of-24 3-point attempts on Saturday at Ferris State. The total matches last year's high of 11 3-pointers against Drury in the GLVC Tournament. The Flyers had a pair of 10 3-pointer games last season. They came in back-to-back games, Dec. 2 at Maryville and Dec. 4 at UMSL.
THAT'S A ROAD TRIP - Following Friday's game against Upper Iowa, the Flyers will next be in action on Nov. 24 and 25 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lewis will play BYU-Hawaii and Northeastern State in the Oahu Classic.
COUNTING DOWN TO HISTORY - Lewis' contest against Northeastern State will be the 1000th game in Lewis women's basketball history.
LOOKING BACK - Lewis used a thrilling postseason run last year to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Flyers upset four higher seeds to win the championship. First up was an overtime victory at Missouri S&T in which the Flyers rallied from a nine-point deficit with less than three minutes remaining in the game. The Flyers never held a lead until the overtime session. Lewis then defeated Drury, UW-Parkside and Indianapolis to win the title, three teams the Flyers lost to during the regular season. The Flyers earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional, losing to eventual National Runner-Up Michigan Tech in the opening round.
BIG SHOES TO FILL - Senior point guard
Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and senior forward
Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) fueled Lewis' run to the 2010-11 GLVC Championship. Both earned GLVC All-Tournament Team honors with Turpel being named the MVP. Currin played all 165 minutes of the tournament. Currin graduated ranked second in free throw percentage (.815), fourth in 3-point percentage (.387), seventh in 3-pointers made (110) and seventh in assists (408) at Lewis. Turpel graduated ranked second in career made field goals (745), second in blocked shots (123), third in rebounds (805), fourth in points (1,819), fifth in field goal percentage (.491) and sixth in scoring average (15.7) at Lewis.
