MILWAUKEE - The Lewis women's basketball team dropped a 62-40 decision to Horizon League opponent UW-Milwaukee to open up the 2011 exhibition schedule on Friday (Nov. 4) evening at Klotsche Center.

The Flyers jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead thanks to five points from sophomore Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill., Washington) and a layup by junior Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill., Round Lake). Lewis did not trail the Panthers until 10:19 remaining in the first half.

UWM extended their lead to seven at 22-15 on consecutive three pointers but Lewis responded as senior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill., Sandburg, Eastern Illinois) knocked down a three of her own and Murdock knocked down a jumper of her own. The Panthers went on a 7-0 run late in the half and led 31-22 at halftime.

"I was happy with our half-court defense in the first half and I thought we played hard," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.

The Panthers controlled the second half jumping out to a 17-3 run to open the final stanza. Grayer led all scorers with 13 points while Murdock added 10 points of her own.

"We got a little tired at the end and they exploited our size." Carlsen added. "Four freshmen played some big minutes for us and had glimpses of great play today.

"We have a lot to benefit from this game today."

The Flyers have a quick turnaround as they head to Evanston, Ill. on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip-off against Big Ten opponent Northwestern.
