HANOVER PARK, Ill. - The Lewis University men's tennis team opened up the 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with an 8-1 victory over visiting Quincy on Friday (Mar. 25) evening at the Centre Court Athletic Club.
With the win, Lewis improves to 4-2 (1-0 GLVC) while Quincy drops to 1-2 (0-1 GLVC).
The Flyers were successful despite having junior Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) out of the lineup.
"The guys did a great job in stepping up today without Tonis," head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "We have not had a match in a couple weeks so it was good to get back in competition again and we looked pretty solid."
Junior Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Rodrigo Marroquin and teamed up with sophomore Nick Heidenfelder (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-5 triumph over John Moskol and John Irish.
At No. 2 singles, junior Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) defeated Martin Salkeld 6-2, 6-0 and a No. 1 doubles defeated Marroquin and Salkeld, 8-1 with senior Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule/Missouri Valley).
Pestinger defeated Lane Luhring 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) beat Baxter Grace, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and teamed up with graduate student Jonathan Teune (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South/Taylor University) for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Grace and Luhring.
At No. 6 singles, sophomore Selwyn Hansana (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) claimed a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Dan Martin.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday (Mar. 25) evening against Saint Joseph's at 7:30 PM at College Park Athletic Club West in Lincolnshire.
