Louisville, Ky. – After seeing a 4-2 lead slip away against Northern Kentucky on Friday, the Lewis University women's tennis team responded to that adversity with an 8-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over host Bellarmine at the Eddie Weber Tennis Center on Saturday (Apr. 16) afternoon.
With the win, Lewis improves to 11-5 (5-1 GLVC). The Knights fall to 14-6 (3-3 GLVC).
“We responded outstandingly today after the setback yesterday to Northern Kentucky,” Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. “We could have made excuses after only eight hours in our hotel, but instead we made shots.”
Lewis freshman Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) and sophomore Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) earned an 8-4 victory over Rebecca Porter and Hannah-Rose Hagan at No. 1 doubles.
Kranczicki added a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles over Porter while Hargrove earned the 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles over Jaime Claeys.
Flyer freshman Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and junior Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles over Claeys and Emily Roebker.
Lanstiak was victorious at No. 2 singles over Roebker, 6-0, 6-2 and Brown upended Kelly Hollingsworth, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Lewis' Jody Wagner (Avon, Ohio/Avon) (Avon, Ohio/Avon) earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Hagan at No. 4 singles and Flyer freshman Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) defeated Keyly Knechtel 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 19), hosting Olivet Nazarene at 2 PM in a non-conference home match at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
