Cincinnati, Ohio – All season long the Lewis University women's tennis team has looked to the top of the lineup, where two freshmen have consistently led the team.
On Friday (Apr. 22), a third freshman lifted the Flyers to a pair of victories in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and a berth in the championship match on Saturday (Apr. 23) afternoon.
Lewis freshman Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) came through for her team when they needed her most, as she rallied for the 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 come-from-behind win over Jaycie Schmidt at No. 6 singles to help the Flyers clinch the 5-3 win over Rockhurst in the GLVC Women's Tennis Tournament Semifinals at the Queen City Racquet Club.
Earlier in the day, Lewis claimed a 5-0 win over Missouri-St. Louis. The Flyers face Drury in the championship matchb at 12 PM (EST) on Saturday afternoon.
With the wins, Lewis improves to 13-5. Rockhurst falls to 16-6 and UMSL drops to 8-11.
Lewis freshman Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) and junior Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) upended Rockhurst's Maureen Reilley and Erin Bales, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Kranczicki then bested Reilley, who is the 2011 GLVC Player of the Year and No. 45 in the nation, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 1 singles.
Flyer freshman Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and junior Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) defeated Karsyn Betts and Rachel Lazenby 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
Lanstiak earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles over Betts.
"The ladies were so tough and determined tonight," Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "It was a great win for the ladies and for our program.
"It is a great day to be a Flyer."
The Flyers advanced to the semifinals against Rockhurst after a 5-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis.
The Kranczicki/Hargrove duo earned an 8-6 victory over Louisa Werner and Pujitha Bandi at No. 1 doubles. Kranczicki won a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles over Bandi.
Lanstiak and Brown won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles over Aya Gombo and Katie Rynkiewich. Lanstiak was victorious at No. 2 singles over Werner, 6-1, 6-1.
Mills and senior Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas) and earned a 9-7 victory over Leticia Garcia and Danielle Henkel at No. 3 doubles.
The matches at No. 3-6 singles were not finished as Lewis had won the match with five victories.
