Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's tennis team split two matches on Friday (Apr. 8) afternoon, defeating Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Kentucky Wesleyan, 8-1 and falling to #42 Ferris State, 5-4 at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
With the split, the Flyers are now 8-4 (3-0 GLVC). Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 12-7 (0-3 GLVC) while Ferris State improves to 18-4.
In the 8-1 win over Kentucky Wesleyan, Lewis freshman Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) and junior Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) defeated Alicja Augustynska and Maddy Bogle, 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Kranczicki earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jayden Morrison at No. 1 singles while Hargrove won a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Augustynska at No. 3 singles.
Flyer freshman Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and junior Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles over Morrison and Hannah Butcher.
Lanstiak was victorious at No. 2 singles over Tatum McMahon, 6-1, 6-2 while Brown defeated Kendall Ganus, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
At No. 3 doubles, the Lewis duo of Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas) and Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) earned an 8-6 win over Ganus and Jamie Brown. Mills also defeated Brown at No. 6 singles, 7-6, 6-2.
In the near upset victory over Ferris State, the Kranczicki/Hargrove tandem defeated Amy Ingle and Tiffany Rheynard, 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Kranczicki earned a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles over Alina Stanila.
At No. 2 doubles, Lanstiak and Brown took down Stanila and Melissa Flowers, 8-3. Lanstiak won a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles over Ingle.
“I am so proud of the way the ladies played today,” Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. “It was a great college tennis match and Ferris State is a very good team and we battled them from the beginning all the way to the last singles match which decided the outcome.
“We have some things working well in doubles and we always fight in singles, we just need everyone healthy and we will be even tougher.”
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday (Apr. 10), hosting Southern Indiana at 10 AM.
