No. 17 Lewis Women’s Volleyball Drops 3-2 Decision At UW-Parkside

Flyers fall in five

SOMMERS, Wis.
– UW-Parkside upended No. 17 Lewis women's volleyball 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11) on Tuesday evening at DeSimone Gymnasium.

Junior Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) had a double-double of 19 kills and 13 digs. Freshman setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) recorded 61 assists and 10 digs. Junior Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) had 16 kills. Senior Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) hit .406 with 15 kills. Sophomore Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) added 18 digs while senior Kelly McConkey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) totaled 17.

After the teams split the opening frames, Lewis earned a victory in a third set which featured 13 ties and three lead changes. The final tie of the frame came at 20 before Lewis went on a 5-2 run to take the game. Mount had a kill for point 24 and an ace on point 25.

The Flyers had an opportunity to win the match in four after taking leads of 7-2 and 15-11. A UW-Parkside service error gave Lewis a 23-22 lead late in the set. Following a Rangers timeout, UW-Parkside scored the next two points. Krumwiede tied it at 24 with a kill, only to see UW-Parkside tally the next two points and win the set.

UW-Parkside jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set. The Flyers rallied late to make it 13-11, but couldn't complete the comeback.

“We aren't learning as a mach goes on,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. “If a team adjusts to us during a game we aren't adjusting back.”

Caroline Langer led the Rangers with 19 kills.

Lewis falls to 5-3 and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UW-Parkside improves to 3-5 and 2-1 in the GLVC. The Flyers are at Indianapolis on Friday and travel to St. Joseph's on Saturday.
