Romeoville, Ill. - The Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team put a damper on the end of homecoming week for Lewis University, as the Tritons scored a pair of first-half goals on their way to the 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference road win over the Flyers at the MAC (Multi-Purpose Athletics Complex) on Sunday (Sept. 25) afternoon.
"We need to have guys who can play hard and with a passion," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "We didn't have that today.
"We're not good enough to just show up to win," Fiffles continued. "We need to come out and battle right off the bat."
With the victory, UMSL improves to 3-2-3 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play, while the Flyers fall to 3-5 on the campaign and 3-3 in GLVC action.
UMSL's Mike McCarthy opened up the scoring for the Tritons in the 29th minute, as he took a beautiful feed from Almin Sabotic to give Missouri-St. Louis the 1-0 advantage. The Tritons extended that lead to 2-0, as Jordan Bruce lifted an arcing shot over a charging
Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) from about 20 yards out at the 38:17 mark.
Lewis was able to cut that lead in half in the final six minutes, as junior
Lazaro Gil (Miami, Fla./) (Miami, Fla./Garden City C.C.) knocked in a free kick from about 20 yards for his first goal of the season.
The Flyers kept Tritons goalkeeper TIm Boruff busy on Sunday, but he was up to the task, as he made 10 saves on the afternoon. For the game, Lewis outshot UMSL, 20-10, and had 12 shots on goal to the Tritons' four.
Lewis returns to action on Friday, September 30th, as the Flyers head to Louisville, Ky., to square off with Bellarmine for a 6:30 p.m. first kick.
