ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis women's basketball's first home game in over a month wasn't enough to get the Flyers in the win column as Lewis dropped a 72-51 decision to Quincy on Thursday (Jan. 12) evening.
Freshman Kristen Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) earned her first career start on Thursday. Lewis also turned to a zone defense for much of the game.
The changes paid early dividends as Lewis jumped out to an 18-12 advantage. However a four-minute Lewis scoring drought combined with 10 straight Quincy points put the Lady Hawks back in the lead. Quincy took a 29-25 lead to the break. Quincy scored the first eight points of the second half and held on from there.
“Early we did a good job on the defensive end of talking and being active,” head coach
Lisa Carlsen said. “In the second half Quincy found more success offensively.”
Junior
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) led Lewis in scoring with eight points. Freshman
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) and junior
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) each added seven points. Itschner finished with four points, four steals and a block.
Lewis held a 28-24 advantage in points in the paint. Quincy found success beyond the arc, making 10-of-21 3-pointers.
Quincy improves to 9-4 (4-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 3-10 (1-4 GLVC). Lewis returns to the court on Saturday as the UIS Prairie Stars come to Neil Carey Arena for a 5:30 p.m. start.
