Aurora, Ill. - The Lewis University women's volleyball team went 1-1 in the first day of the 2012 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament on Friday (Oct. 12) at the Great Lakes Center.

In the first match of the day, the Flyers (12-8, 7-2 GLVC) defeated No. 21 Ferris State (14-4, 8-1 GLIAC) 16-25, 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 15-10, led by Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) who had 20 kills and 21 digs.

Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs, with two blocks. Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./ Harper Creek) had 51 assists in the five-set match victory.

"Against the defense that Ferris State runs Jen's numbers are really impressive," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "Ferris State defense is geared to slow down your outsides and that she was able to step up is really awesome."

The Flyers fell to Ashland (15-4, 6-3 GLIAC) in the second match of the day, 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 27-25.

"Play was a little flat at the beginning with both teams coming off five-set victories earlier," Smith said. "It was more of who could find the energy faster and they did."

Krumwiede had another double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Barea had 40 assists and 16 digs for the Flyers. Jillian Carlberg (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) had four blocks in the four-set match.

Lewis will take on Northern Michigan in the final day of the GLVC/GLAIC Crossover on Saturday (Oct. 13) at 1 PM at the Great Lakes Center.
