Somers, Wis. -
The Lewis University men's soccer team was in control of their own fate on Wednesday (Oct. 24), as the Flyers needed to either win or tie against host UW-Parkside to clinch the eighth and final spot in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The Flyers left no doubt, as they scored three second-half goals on their way to the 3-0 GLVC victory over the host Rangers at Wood Road Field.

The win is the Flyers' season-high fourth-straight victory and third-straight shutout. Lewis is now 9-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play and the Flyers have won six out of their last seven contests. UW-Parkside ends the 2012 season with a record of 6-10-1 overall and 5-10 in GLVC action.

Lewis sophomore forward George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) found the back of the net first for the Flyers, as he beat Ranger goalkeeper Nick Huftalin at the 46:48 mark to give the Flyers the 1-0 lead. The goal is Thomson's team-best, fifth-goal of the season.

"The bottom line is we still have to do the little things to win and lately we've been keeping the ball out of the back of the net," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "George's score early was so key, because we got to relax and (Parkside) had to come out and get us, and that changes the game."

Flyer junior forward Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) extended Lewis' lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute on an unassisted breakaway score.

Lewis added an insurance goal three minutes later as freshman Colin Donnally (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) took a feed from classmate Luke Comerouski (Itasca, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy) (Itasca, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy) for the third score of the day.

Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) collected his third-straight shutout, as he made four stops on the afternoon. Huftalin turned away six Flyer shots.

As a team, the Flyers out-shot UW-Parkside, 19-13, with nine shots on frame to the Rangers' four.

Lewis now awaits its first round opponent for the tournament. The match will be either Saturday (Oct. 27) or Sunday (Oct. 28) at a time to be determined.
