Saginaw, Mich. – The Lewis University women's basketball team eclipsed 90 points for the first time since a 90-68 double overtime victory at Upper Iowa on Nov. 18, 2011, when the squad defeated Northwood, 91-77, on Sunday (Nov. 11) at the Ryder Center as part of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge hosted by Saginaw Valley State.
  
The Flyers improve to 2-0 on the season while the Timberwolves fall to 1-1.
 
“We did a nice job of sharing the basketball,” Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. “Northwood had a hard time guarding us inside.”
 
Northwood only held the lead briefly at 5-3 two minutes into the game. Sophomore Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) scored five straight points to tie the game and secure the lead that Lewis held the rest of the game.
 
The Timberwolves were able to cut the Flyers first half lead, that peaked at 19-points, to nine twice in the last five minutes of the half. Each time Lewis' lead dipped under double-digits, the Flyers were able to feed the ball into the post for the score to take a 52-36 lead into half.
 
Sophomore forward Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) scored 18 of her 25 points in the first half, as Northwood couldn't find an answer to stop Lewis' post players all game.
 
Kristen Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) had a big second half, scoring 10 of her 15 points.

The Flyers pushed their lead to 21 points when Reinhart scored a fast break layup at the 9:15 mark. Lewis continued to keep their lead in double-digits over Northwood to win the game 91-77. Northwood was led by Rachel Church with 18 points in the loss.
 
“I am very proud of the ladies,” Carlsen said. “It is a great way to start the season.”
 
Lewis will take on Wayne State on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 1 PM ET in Detroit, Mich.
