Detroit, Mich. – The Lewis women's basketball team was able to hold onto their half-time lead, after Wayne State was able to slow down the Flyers in the second half, to win 75-71 to go 3-0 on the season. Wayne State falls to 0-1 on the season.

"We did what we had to do to win," Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We had a hard time in the second with Wayne State's pressure and keeping them off the glass.

"We got some free throws down the stretch to hang on."

Two free throws from freshman Mariyah Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) at the 13:23 mark in the first half gave the Flyers an 11-10 lead. Lewis didn't look back, continuing to make baskets and free throws to increase the lead.

Senior Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) led the Flyers with 12 of her 17 points at the half, hitting two three-pointers to help Lewis go into the locker room with a 10-point lead over Wayne State, 35-25.

Lewis held their lead over Wayne State throughout the second half, only allowing the Warriors within two points with nine seconds left in the game. Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) hit two late free throws to seal the 75-71 victory for the Flyers.

Nellen fired off all 11 of her points in the second half, going 6-for-7 at the free throw line and hitting two three-pointers. She also pulled down five rebounds and had five assists.

Sophomore Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) tallied 10 of her 13 points in the first-half, going 7-for-9 at the line and nine rebounds in the game while junior Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) came off the bench to score 13 points, pull down four rebounds, block three shots and had two assists in 23 minutes of play.

Wayne State's Juanita Cochran lead all scorers with 21 points on 10-for-13 from the floor, had nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

"Anytime you can win on the road versus a regional opponent, it's a big win," Carlsen said.
