Indianapolis, Ind. – With three Flyers tallying double-digit kills, the Lewis University women's volleyball 2012 season ended in a 3-1 (27-25, 25-16, 22-25,25-23) loss to Ferris State on Thursday, (Nov. 29) in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Midwest Regionals at the Ruth Lilly Center.
Lewis completes the season with a 26-11 record while Ferris State improves to 24-7.
Flyers' seniors
Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township),
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial), and
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) each tallied double-digit kills. Perschnick had 19 kills and three blocks while Krumwiede had 17 kills and 23 digs and Mitros added 10 kills and 22 digs.
Setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 46 assists and 18 digs while libero
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) had 18 digs for the Flyers.
After tying the first set at 2-2, Ferris State steadily built their lead out to four points at 15-11. Lewis was able to chip away at their lead to tie the match at 18-all on a kill by Krumwiede on a pass from Mitros.
The squads exchanged the lead six times before the Bulldogs were able to put consecutive points together to take the first set, 27-25.
Ferris State jumped out ahead of the Flyers in the second set, taking a 12-point lead at 20-8. Kills by Mitros and Perschnick and a block by
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) helped the Flyers go on a five-point run to chip at the Bulldogs' 22-15 lead.
The Bulldogs took the second set, 25-16, on an attack error by Mitros.
In the third set, the Flyers got some energy off the bench from reserves
Morgan Cebula (Steven's Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) and
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport). Cebula got a big solo block to keep the Flyers momentum going, while Davito got two kills. A kill from Barea to push the score to 11-6, forced the Ferris State bench to call a timeout.
Ferris State picked away at Lewis' lead, going on a 9-1 run to tie the match at 14-all. The squads exchanged three lead changes before the Flyers were able to take a 20-18 lead on back-to-back kills from Perschnick.
A block by Cebula and Krumwiede gave the Flyers the set 25-22, to force a fourth.
The Flyers built a lead in the fourth set, extending it to five points at 16-11 to force the Bulldog's bench to take their final time out of the set.
The Bulldogs cut the Flyers lead when they tied the set at 22-all after going on a five-point run. Ferris State got the set and match point on a kill from Anne Sutton.
Ferris State' Sutton had 20 kills while Samantha Fordyce tallied 50 assists and 14 digs.
The Bulldogs advance to face No. 1 seed Indianapolis at 7:30 on Friday (Nov. 30) at 7:30 PM ET at the Ruth Lilly Center. Indianapolis defeated No. 8 seed Rockhurst, 3-0, to advance to the semi-final match. No. 6 seed Hillsdale will face No. 7 seed Ashland in the 5 PM ET match.
