Game Notes
Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team travels across town to take on area rival St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday (Dec. 1). The Saints (3-4) jump out of conference play to host the Flyers (3-1) at the Sullivan Center with a 5 PM scheduled tip.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS - First-year coach Samantha Quigley has her Fighting Saints out to a 3-4 start and a 3-3 record in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Saints dropped a 79-60 decision to Purdue University Calumet for their first home loss of the season on Nov. 28.
ALL TIME SERIES - The Flyers hold a 31-7 series lead.
LAST TIME WE MET - Lewis fell to USF 69-60 on Dec. 8, 2012 at Neil Carey Arena. While the Flyers grabbed a quick 14-6 lead before the Fighting Saints erased the deficit thanks to a 13-5 run. Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg) set career-highs in points (19) and 3-pointers after making 5-of-9 from long range. Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) matched a career-high with 23 points. The Saints were led by Julie Schiffler's 16-point game.
FORMER FLYERS COACH BRIAN MICHALAK - Michalak was at the helm of the women's basketball team for nine seasons from 1993 to 2002 (117-126), leading the Flyers to their third-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Basketball Tournament in 1998, where the squad finished 23-5. He also was the assistant baseball coach under Irish O'Reilly during his tenure at Lewis. Miichalak is in his second year as the head coach of the USF baseball team.
SIXTH WOMAN - Junior Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington)'s Number 23 has been the first number Head Coach Lisa Carlsen has called out as a reserve in three of four games this season. Grayer is averaging 10.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in just over 19 minutes of play. She has shot 9-of-20 (.450) from behind the arc.
FEARLESS FRESHMEN - Forward Maryiah Henley and guard Alyssa Dengler (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) have been key reserves for the Flyers early this season. Henley is averaging 3.0 points and 3.5 rebounds, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and perfect from the charity stripe (4-for4) in 11.5 minutes. Dengler is averaging 1.5 points and .5 rebounds with only one turnover in 50 minutes (12.5 average) of action on the court.
ALL-TIMERS - Senior Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) has etched her name into Lewis' All-Time record books. Murdock's career numbers put her tenth in total blocked shots (64).
CENTRAL MISSOURI TOO MUCH FOR LEWIS- With both teams battling to stay undefeated early in the season, Lewis took a one-point lead into halftime. UCM came out of the half pushing the tempo and kept feeding their post Nicole Caddell, who led all scorers with 24 points and 16 rebounds. UCM sealed the 84-77 victory with a lay up with seven seconds left in the game.
FLYERS DEFEAT WAYNE STATE - Senior Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) led the Flyers with 17 points, going 7-for-8 in shooting from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arch. Lewis was able to withstand Wayne State's late surge to win 75-71 in WSU's home and season opener on Saturday (Nov. 17).
REINHART NAMED GLVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Sophomore Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) was named GLVC Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Nov. 12 to open the season after she opened the season with a double-double (22 pts-12 reb.) over SVSU and led the Flyers with 25 points adn eight rebounds over Northwood. She also went 16-for-18 (.889) from the free throw line.
GLVC/GLIAC CHALLENGE - Lewis defeated Saginaw Valley State (70-60) and Northwood (91-77) as part of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Saginaw, Mich. to open the 2012-13 season on Nov. 10 and Nov. 11.
