EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Freshman
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday (Feb. 11) at Southern Indiana but the Lewis women's basketball team dropped the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest 72-62.
The double-double for Reinhart is the second of her career. She went 5-for-5 from the floor with seven rebounds in the first half.
Lewis controlled the first half thanks mostly to a 16-0 run. It turned a 19-17 USI lead into a 33-19 Lewis advantage. A 3-pointer by sophomore
Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) (Washington, Ill./Washington) started the run. Freshman
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) scored seven points in the stretch. The span lasted over six minutes. Lewis led 35-25 at halftime.
USI charged out the gates in the second half and by the 15 minute mark had tied it up at 39. An 8-0 USI run put the Screaming Eagles up 50-44 just after midway through the half. It was tied at 55 with 5:32 remaining when USI put the game away with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes.
"We played well in three of our four halves during this trip," Lewis head coach
Lisa Carlsen said. "It leaves you thinking 'what if' as you ride back home."
Johnson finished with 13 points. USI's Stephanie Carpenter scored a game-high 22 points.
USI out-scored Lewis 47-27 in the sescond half.
"We really struggled in all facets of the game in the second half," Carlsen said. "Give USI credit, they played well."
Lewis falls to 6-17 (4-11 GLVC). USI improves to 8-15 (2-13 GLVC). The Flyers travel to Indianapolis on Thursday.
