Complete Game Notes
Lewis women's basketball (7-18, 5-12 GLVC) closes the regular season on Thursday (Feb. 23) with a road contest at No. 16 UW-Parkside (21-4, 14-3 GLVC). Start time is 5:30 p.m. Mark Vasko will have the call on WJOL 1340 AM.
THE STAKES - A win for the Flyers over UW-Parkside OR a loss by UIS at Quincy gives Lewis the 12th and final GLVC Tournament playoff spot. Should Lewis lose to UW-Parkside and UIS defeat Quincy Lewis would still get into the tournament if Maryville defeats UMSL. This scenario would put Lewis, UMSL and UIS all at 5-13. UIS loses this tiebreaker and leaves UMSL as the No.11 and Lewis as the No. 12 seed. Lewis could move up to the No. 11 seed with a win over UW-Parkside combined with a loss by UMSL at Maryville.
AGAINST THE RANGERS - Lewis leads the all-time series with the Rangers 33-18
LAST TIME WE MET - The Rangers, then ranked No. 23, defeated Lewis 83-63 on Jan. 12 at Neil Carey Arena. The Rangers took a 39-30 lead to the break thanks to a 12-2 advantage on points off turnovers in the first half. It was a six-point game at 47-41 just over five minutes into the second half when UW-Parkside used a 10-2 run to take control of the game.
BEST IN THE POSTSEASON - Should the Flyers earn a berth in the GLVC Tournament they would have reason for optimism. Lewis is 7-2 (.778) in the GLVC Tournament since 2008-09. No team in the conference has more wins or a better win percentage during that time. Lewis won the GLVC Championship last season and advanced to the GLVC Semifinals the previous two seasons.
SWISH FROM KISH -
Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg) has made two or more 3-pointers in eight consecutive games.
SPEAKING RECENTLY - Over the last seven games,
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) (16.0),
Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg) (11.6) and
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) (10.4) are all averaging double-figures for Lewis.
A LITTLE MORE ON THE LAST SEVEN GAMES - Lewis has been playing their best basketball of the season starting with an 87-82 loss at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 28. Lewis has won three of the contests and led in the second half of the other four games. In the last seven contests Lewis is averaging 74.0 points per game. The Flyers averaged 63.6 points per game during their first 18 games.
FOR STARTERS - The Flyers have used 11 starting lineups this season. Lewis' starting lineup has been less fluid over the last quarter of the season. The Flyers have used the same starting lineup of Johnson, Kish, Nellen, Reinhart and Carbaugh since the Jan. 28 contest at Saint Joseph's.
WRITE HER NAME IN INK - Freshman point guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) is the only Flyer to have started every game for the Flyers.
IT MUST BE THE NUMBER - Freshman
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic), who wears the same 34 jersey number of fourth all-time scorer at Lewis
Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) (1,819 points), is doing things Turpel never did in her freshman season. Reinhart scored 27 at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 28 and 22 against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 18. Turpel never scored more than 20 points in a game during her freshman season. Reinhart has two double-doubles this year while Turpel didn't record a single double-double her freshman season.
REINHART OF GOLD - Since being inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 14 against UIS, freshman
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) is averaging 14.4 points per game and shooting 50.4 percent (64-of-127) from the floor. She is taking advantage of her chances at the free throw line, shooting 93.8 percent (45-of-48) from the charity stripe since Jan. 14.
FAIR TO COMPARE - With almost an entire season of stats it's fair to look at how freshmen
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Jess Rinehart compare to point guard
Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and forward
Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) who graduated last season.
In 2011-12, Johnson is averaging 8.6 points and 2.8 assists per game. Currin averaged 3.6 points and 1.3 assists per game in 2007-08. Worth noting, Currin earned the starting point guard spot midway through the season and finished the season playing 395 total minutes. Johnson has already played 788 minutes.
In 2011-12, Reinhart is averaging 10.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Turpel averaged 11.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2007-08.
ADDING AN ALL-AMERICAN -
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) joined the Lewis women's basketball team on Dec. 8. The name might be familiar to those around the GLVC as she was an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Third Team selection as a senior right side hitter for Lewis in 2011. Koeneman recorded a team-high 299 kills with 91 blocks for the Flyers in 2011 and helped Lewis to a 25-7 record. The 6-2 forward with junior status for basketball last played organized basketball in high school.
700 & 500 -
Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) needs 10 points to reach 700 and 28 rebounds to reach 500 for her career.
UP NEXT - Should the Flyers advance to the GLVC Tournament Lewis will have a road game in the first round. The game will be played either Saturday, Feb. 25 or Sunday, Feb. 26 with a time to be determined.
