Complete Game Notes
No. 12 seed Lewis women's basketball (7-19) travels to No. 5 seed Missouri S&T (18-8) on Sunday (Feb. 26) for a first round contest in the 2012 SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Start time is 1 p.m in Rolla, Mo.
DEJA VU - Lewis opened the GLVC Tournament at Missouri S&T last season. The Flyers defeated the Miners 79-74 (OT). The win was the first of four straight for the Flyers who would go on to win the 2011 GLVC Championship.
MORE ON LAST YEAR'S GAME - Lewis never held a lead until overtime. Missouri S&T led by nine points with less than two minutes left before the Flyers made a late push in regulation to tie it.
Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) made a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation to force it to overtime.
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) scored 23 points for the Flyers.
AGAINST THE MINERS - Lewis is 5-2 all-time against Missouri S&T. The Flyers are 3-0 all-time at Rolla, Mo.
NEW FACES - Of the eight Flyers who saw action in last season's win at Missouri S&T, only
Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion),
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) and
Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) remain on Lewis' roster.
BEST IN THE POSTSEASON - Lewis is 7-2 (.778) in the GLVC Tournament since 2008-09. No team in the conference has more wins or a better win percentage during that time. Lewis won the GLVC Championship last season and advanced to the GLVC Semifinals the previous two seasons.
SWISH FROM KISH -
Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg) has made two or more 3-pointers in nine consecutive games.
THE LAST EIGHT GAMES - Lewis has been playing their best basketball starting with an 87-82 loss at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 28. Lewis has won three of the contests and led in the second half in four of the other five games. In the last eight contests Lewis is averaging 72.4 points per game. The Flyers averaged 63.6 points per game during their first 18 games.
FOR STARTERS - The Flyers have used 11 starting lineups this season. Lewis' starting lineup has been less fluid over the last quarter of the season. The Flyers have used the same starting lineup of Johnson, Kish, Nellen, Reinhart and Carbaugh since the Jan. 28 contest at Saint Joseph's.
WRITE HER NAME IN INK - Freshman point guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) is the only Flyer to have started every game this year.
IT MUST BE THE NUMBER - Freshman
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic), who wears the same 34 jersey number of fourth all-time scorer at Lewis
Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) (1,819 points), is doing things Turpel never did in her freshman season. Reinhart scored 27 at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 28 and 22 against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 18. Turpel never scored more than 20 points in a game during her freshman season. Reinhart has two double-doubles this year while Turpel didn't record a single double-double her freshman season.
REINHART OF GOLD - Since being inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 14 against UIS, freshman
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) is averaging 14.5 points per game and shooting 51.9 percent (70-of-135) from the floor. She is taking advantage of her chances at the free throw line, shooting 90.6 percent (48-of-53) from the charity stripe since Jan. 14.
FAIR TO COMPARE - With an entire season of stats it's fair to look at how freshmen
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Jess Rinehart compare to point guard
Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and forward
Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) who graduated last season.
In 2011-12, Johnson is averaging 8.5 points and 2.8 assists per game. Currin averaged 3.6 points and 1.3 assists per game in 2007-08. Worth noting, Currin earned the starting point guard spot midway through the season and finished the season playing 395 total minutes. Johnson has already played 819 minutes.
In 2011-12, Reinhart is averaging 11.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Turpel averaged 11.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2007-08.
ADDING AN ALL-AMERICAN -
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) joined the Lewis women's basketball team on Dec. 8. The name might be familiar to those around the GLVC as she was an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Third Team selection as a senior right side hitter for Lewis in 2011. Koeneman recorded a team-high 299 kills with 91 blocks for the Flyers in 2011 and helped Lewis to a 25-7 record. The 6-2 forward with junior status for basketball last played organized basketball in high school.
700 & 500 -
Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) needs 10 points to reach 700 and 24 rebounds to reach 500 for her career.
UP NEXT - A win over the Miners and the Flyers advance to the Second Round. The tournament is reseeded following the First Round and as the No. 12 seed Lewis would play No. 1 seed Quincy. The Second Round, Semifinals and Championship Game will be held in Springfield, Ill. at the Prairie Capital Convention Center March 1-4.
