Maryville, Mo. - The nine-match winning streak for the Lewis University men's tennis team was on the verge of being broken, as Flyer freshman
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) found himself trailing 5-2 in the third set of the deciding match against Northwest Missouri State's Rafael Bugiga.
Aunapuu fought back and claimed the 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win over Bugiga to help the Flyers to the 5-4 upset over the No. 42 Bearcats and extend their winning streak to 10 matches on Saturday (March 24) afternoon.
"This is the biggest win in program history," Lewis head men's tennis
Brett Bridel said. "I knew that they would be really tough because they beat Drury a few weeks ago, but this was a total team effort."
With the win, Lewis improves to 10-1, while the host Bearcats are now 8-3.
Aunapuu also paired up with senior
Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) for the 8-3 win over Mario Jakovljevic and Jose Ortega at No. 1 doubles. Lapimaa also picked up the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Calvin Patterson at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Lewis'
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) and
Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Morain Valley C.C.) claimed the 8-3 win over Guilherme Narducci and Bugiga. Wojnarowski tied the overall match up at 4-apiece with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 come-from-behind win over Luis Altimires at No. 5 singles.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (March 25), as the Flyers head to Kansas City, Mo., to square off with Rockhurst for an 11 a.m. non-conference showdown.
