Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 47 Lewis University women's tennis team earned a 7-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Bellarmine on Friday (Apr. 13) afternoon at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex, setting the stage for a showdown for the GLVC East Division title with Northern Kentucky on Saturday (Apr. 14) morning.
First serve for the Flyers and Norse is set for 10 a.m.
"We did some good things in doubles today, but we also did some bad things, which is making it harder for us to win," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "We overcame that adversity and fought to come out on top.
Bridel was especially pleased with the Flyers' singles play.
"That was some of the best singles play we've had all year," Bridel said. "This is the time for us to be doing that as we get ready for the conference tournament."
With the win, Lewis improves to 18-2 overall and 5-0 in conference action, while the visiting Knights fall to 13-6 on the campaign and 3-3 in GLVC play.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis freshman
Brianna Markgraf (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and sophomore
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) edged Bellarmine's Rebecca Porter and Evann Waschuk, 9-8. Kranczicki also picked up the 6-0, 6-2 win over Waschuk at No. 2 singles.
Lewis' No. 2 tandem of sophomores
Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) tagged BU's Jamie Claeys and Emily Roebker with the 8-4 defeat. Mills picked up a 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 win over Abigail Dorton at No. 6 singles, while Lanstiak handed Porter a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at No. 1 singles.
Lewis seniors
Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) and
Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) wrapped up the singles wins for the Flyers. Hargrove defeated Roebker, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, while Brown upended Claeys, 6-2, 6-3, at No.4 singles.
