Springfield, Mo. - The No. 37 Lewis University men's tennis team avenged a pair of losses on Friday (Apr. 20) afternoon, as the Flyers dropped both No. 48 Rockhurst (5-3) and No. 32 Southern Indiana (5-4) to advance to the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship match.
Rockhurst had beaten Lewis, 6-3, in Kansas City, Mo., on March 25th and Southern Indiana handed the Flyers a 5-4 defeat in Evansville, Ind., on April 6th.
With the wins, Lewis improves to 19-4 overall, while Rockhurst is now 9-4 and Southern Indiana drops to 20-3.
Against Southern Indiana, the Flyers fell behind early, as the the Screaming Eagles won two doubles matches. The Flyers won at No. 1 doubles, as senior
Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) and freshman
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) defefated USI's Santiago Lopez and Michael Kuzaj, 8-6. Levandi also clinched the victory for the Flyers with the 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 come-from-behind win over Ben Boesing at No. 3 singles. Wojnarowski added a 6-3, 6-4 win over Diego Gimenez at No. 5 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Lewis senior
Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) claimed the 6-2, 6-2 win over Juan Quiroz, while GLVC Freshman of the Year,
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) earned the 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Lopez at No. 2 singles.
The Flyers also fell behind early against Rockhurst, as the Hawks picked up two doubles victories. Lewis' only win came at No. 2, as Lapimaa and Aunapuu upended Victor Klintcharov and Rodolfo Gauto-Mariotti, 8-4. Lapimaa added a 6-3, 6-1 win over John Lazenby at No. 1 singles, while Aunapuu dropped Yassir Ghazi El, 6-0, 7-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Levandi claimed the 7-5, 6-0 win over Klintcharov. The Flyers' final victory came at No. 5 singles, as junior
Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) outlasted Gauto-Mariotti, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, 7-1.
