Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team put together a big team effort to shutout Great Lakes Valley Conference foe UW-Parkside, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 33-31) on Tuesday, (Sept. 18) at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 5-6 on the season 2-1 in GLVC play while the Rangers fall to 8-3, 1-2 in GLVC.
“I think it was a good step forward for the team,” Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. “We had our backs against the wall in the third game and I think they played relatively calm and stayed aggressive.”
Seniors
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) and
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill. / Providence Catholic) each had a double-double in kills and digs. Krumwiede had 13 kills, 12 digs and one block while Mitros had 14 kills, 12 digs and two blocks.
“We had a few lineup changes due to some injuries and everybody rallied each other,” Smith said. “I think they rallied around the changes and in general we have been digging more balls than in the past.
Three other flyers posted double digit digs against UW-Parkside. Freshman
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) had 12 digs and eight kills, while sophomore
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich. / Harper Creek) had 38 assists, 10 digs and one kill. Senor
Mary Carroll (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) had 14 digs and one kill playing as the Flyers libero for the first time.
“Mary played a brand new position tonight at libero,” Smith said. “She has that hustle-don't-let-the-ball-hit-the-floor attitude and I think she stepped up for the team.”
Bridget Nickel led UW-Parkside with 16 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Tricia Triabassi had 15 assists, while Chelsea Neave had 11 for the Rangers. Sarah Mlachnik had 12 digs as well.
