Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Southern Indiana, 3-0

The Flyers are hot at home, defeating the Eagles for their fourth-straight win.

Romeoville, Ill. – Sophomore setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) collected her fifth double-double of the season in the 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 27-25) victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference member Southern Indiana Saturday (Sept. 22) at the Neil Carey Arena. With their fourth-straight win, the Flyers improve to 8-6 on the season, 4-1 in the GLVC. The Eagles fall to 6-8, 4-1 in the GLVC.
 
“I thought it was a really good battle,” Lewis women's volleyball head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Both teams did really well making small adjustments.”
 
Barea collected 32 assists and 17 digs for the Flyers. Senior Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township) (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township) had a big night against the Eagles, getting 11 kills for a .611 attack percentage and three blocks from the middle hitter position.
 
Libero Mary Carroll (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) had 15 digs while freshman Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) had 10 kills against the Eagles.
 
“We had a few key players step up (tonight),” Smith said. “Leigh and Mary, right down to the wire they just refused to let the ball hit the floor and I think that was the difference.
 
Southern Indiana's Jorae Bradbury had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs, while Emily Meyer had 11 kills and seven digs. Kayla Heldman had 14 digs as well for the Eagles.
 
Lewis women's volleyball is back in action on Friday (Sept. 28) when they welcome McKendree to Neil Carey Arena. First serve is set for 7 PM.
