Lewis Women's Volleyball Defeats Bellarmine in Four Sets

The Flyers were able to bounce back in the fourth set to get the win over the Knights.

Four different Lewis University women's volleyball players had double digit kills in the 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20) victory over Bellarmine on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Neil Carey Arena. 

The Great Lakes Valley Conference victory moves the Flyers to 10-6 on the season and 6-1 in conference play, while the Knights fall to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the GLVC.

Senior Jillian Carlberg (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) led the Flyers with 14 kills for a .435 attacking percentage, a career best, and 10 digs. Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Township) and Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) each had 12 digs in the four set contest. Mitros had 16 digs as well.

Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township) (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township) had 10 kills while setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 47 assists and two kills. 

"I think this team is really good at making games exciting," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. 

After the Flyers went up two sets, the Knights were able to battle back to take the third set (25-19). Lewis was able to come up with some defensive stops to win the fourth set (25-20).

"I am really proud that different people stepped up today at different moments," Smith said. "It was nice to see the team pull together and win."

Lewis women's volleyball takes their six-match win streak on the road, heading south to take on Drury on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 5 PM in Springfield, Mo. The Flyers then head to Rolla, Mo., to take on the Miners of Missouri S&T on Sunday (Oct. 7), starting at 1 PM.
