Romeoville, Ill. -
Lewis University sophomore forward George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) headed in his first goal of the season in the 55th minute to lift the host Flyers to the 1-0 victory over Drury University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference season opener on Friday (Sept. 7) night at Lewis Stadium.

Thomson was on the receiving end of a throw in by sophomore defender Michael Pyle (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and converted the score at the 54:47 mark.

With the win, Lewis improves to 1-2 on the campaign, and 1-0 in conference action, while the visiting Panthers drop to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in GLVC play.

Drury entered the contest averaging 6.5 goals-per-game, but Lewis junior goalkeeper Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) was up to the task. Pickett made six stops to earn his first shutout since he blanked Drury, 2-0, last season on October 23rd. His counterpart, Blake Andrews, stoned three Flyer shots on the evening.

Drury outshot Lewis, 18-8, and had six shots on goal, compared to the Flyers' four.

"We did some things better than last week," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "Our team defense was a lot better and to get a clean sheet against a team that scored 13 goals in their first two games is nice."

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 9), as the Flyers host Missouri S&T for a 12 PM first kick.
