Denver, Colo. -
No. 17 Lewis Women's Volleyball fell to No. 5 Central Missouri 3-2, (25-22, 22-25, 28-26, 19-25, 15-11) in the morning session of the Colorado Premier Challenge. In their afternoon match, the Flyers took on No. 9 Angelo State for the third-place title in the bronze bracket, falling 3-1.

The Flyers fall to 3-5 on the season, all in tournament action. The Jennies improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Belles sit at 6-2.

“(Against both teams) we were in position to win multiple times,” Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelle Smith said. “We were just unable to rise above in clutch situations.”

Against Central Missouri, redshirt senior Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./ Providence Catholic) lead the Flyers with 24 kills, 15 digs and two assists while senior Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ill./Elkhart Memorial) had a double double with 16 digs and 13 kills.

“(Colleen and Jen) had good games, but at different times,” Smith said. “If we are going to be a really good team, we are going to need to be more than just those two on the court.”

Junior libero Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) lead the defense with 29 digs and six assists against the Jennies.

Central Missouri had four players with double digit kills while Annie Reilly lead the Jennies with 30 digs and Julia Bates had 49 assists in five sets.

In the bronze bracket third-place match against the No. 9 Angelo State Belles, Lewis dominated the first set, winning 25-12. After the Bells made a few adjustments, they were able to take the next three sets, for the 3-1 victory.

“When you lose four straight matches, you have to work harder period,” said Smith. “We will work on things that we can't fix game-to-game (this week). It's going to take harder work in practice from all of us, coaches too.”

The Flyers open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play on the road when they head to Indiana to take on Saint Joseph's on Friday (Sept. 14) with a 7 PM start then take on Indianapolis on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 3 PM.
