Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 11 Lewis University men's soccer team may have extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games with its 1-1 (2OT) draw against Southern Indiana, but Flyer head coach
Evan Fiffles was not pleased with the results or the performance of his team.
"We can't just show up and not play," Fiffles said. "We are not doing things real well right now. If we want to get a result on Sunday (against UIS), we have to do a lot of things better, and that's the bottom line."Â
With the tie, Lewis (7-0-4, 6-0-3 GLVC) owns its longest unbeaten streak in nine years when they opened the 2004 season without a loss through its first 11 contests. Southern Indiana is now 3-6-2 on the campaign and 2-6-1 in conference action.
Lewis freshman
Alexandro Ayala (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood) put the Flyers on the board first when he blasted a shot past the outstretched arms of USI goalkeeper Jeffrey Neidlinger at the 24:08 mark. Lewis junior
George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) and sophomore
Lenin Roa-Tapia (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) both assisted on the play.
The score would remain that way until the 74th minute when USI forward Caleb Mathers beat Flyer keeper
Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) for the equalizer. Miles Durham earned the helper on Mathers' tally.
Neidlinger and Pickett both made four saves on the evening for their teams.
Southern Indiana outshot Lewis, 19-11, while both squads had five shots on frame.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 13), when they host Illinois Springfield for a 2:30 PM showdown at Lewis Stadium.
