Indianapolis, Ind. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) collected 14 kills to lead the women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-20) victory over Indianapolis on Friday (Oct. 18). WIth the win the Flyers take sole possession of first place in the East Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Flyers move to 13-5 on the season and 9-1 in the GLVC as the Greyhounds fall to 11-8 on the year and 7-3 in league play.
Vertin also picked up seven digs and two block assists for the Flyers. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) picked up 10 kills and four block assists while redshirt freshman libero
Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) collected 11 digs and one ace. Junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) dished out 31 assists. Redshirt freshman middle hitter
Alesia Kroeker (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) had a career-high six block assists in the contest.
"The team was fired up and focused tonight," Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. "They really showed how much they love playing and supporting one another."
The Flyers out-blocked the Greyhounds, 8-0, while putting together a better hitting percentage .344 (39 K, 8 E, 90) to .118 (38 K, 25 E, 110 TA) in three sets.
Indianapolis' offense was led by Julia Watkins with nine kills while Hailey Brown added eight putaways and eight digs. Setter Meghan Binkerd handed out 31 assists.
The Flyers next take on Saint Joseph's (Ind.) on Saturday (Oct. 19) in Rensselaer, Ind., at 1 PM before facing Kentucky State at 4:30 PM.
