Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's swimming team picked up eight first-place finishes to defeat Hillsdale, 117-87, to open the 2013-14 season on Saturday (Oct. 19) at Lewis Pool.
The Flyers, 1-0 in dual meet action, avenged a 160-63 loss at Hillsdale last season.
"We are excited to come out on top over Hillsdale," Lewis head women's swimming coach
Roger Karns said. "They really took it to us last year and we wanted to avenge that loss."
The Flyers kicked off the meet winning the 400-yard medley relay. Freshman
Brittany Kamper (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) teamed up with seniors
Sarah Kenis (Herndon, Va./Oakcrest) and
Caitlyn Scheirer (Washington, Ill./Washington Community) and junior
Cindy Jezuit (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) for a time of 4:07.54.
Kamper also won the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.15) while Kenis tapped the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.97).
Freshman
Kara Treacy (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) picked up first-place finishes in the 1000 (10:47.66) and 500-yard freestyle (5:19.01) events. Classmate
Shannon Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) captured the top times in the 100- (53.22) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.62).
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Sullivan teamed up with freshman
Courtney Duy (Buckeye, Ariz./Millennium), sophomore
Mackenzie Kummer (Addison, Ill./Addison Trail) and senior
Emily Heine (Madison, Miss./Madison Central) for a first-place finish with a time of 3:41.64.
"Today was a great team effort," Karns continued. "I am really excited in how the team performed today."
Lewis next heads to Allendale, Mich., to take on Grand Valley State on Saturday, November 2 at 1 PM ET.
