Lewis Women’s Volleyball Splits Final Day At GLIAC/GLVC Crossover

Aurora, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) was named to the 2013 GLIAC/GLVC Crossover All-Tournament Team as the women's volleyball team walked away with a split on the final day at the Great Lakes Center.
 
Vertin collected 42 kills to average 3.82 kills-per-set for the weekend. She also tallied 37 digs and six total blocks in 11 sets of action.
 
The Flyers opened the day with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-13) sweep of Hillsdale before closing out the weekend with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18) loss to No. 22 Ferris State.
 
With the split, Lewis moves to 16-7 on the season. Hillsdale falls to 11-10 while No. 22 Ferris State moves to 17-5 on the year.
 
"Against Hillsdale, we proved to ourselves that we can be relentless on defense," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "It was a great confidence building match in an area we have been working to improve on."
 
In the first match of the day against Hillsdale, the Flyer offense was led by redshirt sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) with 13 kills and three block assists. Vertin added 10 putaways, 10 digs and three block assists for the Flyers. Junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) tallied a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs, plus five kills. The Flyers' freshman libero Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had 17 digs while redshirt freshman middle hitter Alesia Kroeker (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) tallied two solo blocks and six block assists.
 
Hillsdale's offense was led by Haylee Booms' six kills and 1.5 blocks while teammate Emily Wolfert also picked up six kills and seven digs. Setter Alexis Waugh dished out 23 assists for the GLIAC squad.
 
In the last session of the tournament against Ferris State, Vertin posted 17 digs, eight kills and two block assists.  Davito tallied nine kills for the Flyers. Redshirt freshman libero Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) collected 11 digs while Barea dished out 29 assists.
 
Ferris State's Courtney Rehm posted a floor-high 12 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Setter Stephanie Sikorski had 30 assists while Alexis Huntley collected 13 digs and seven kills.
 
"Ferris State played great and we didn't have an answer," Smith said. "Our inner drive didn't show up. This made for a frustrating way to end the weekend but hopefully a few individuals will step up."
 
The Flyers return to Neil Carey Arena to host Rockhurst on Saturday (Nov. 2) with first serve at 1 PM. Lewis will also take on Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday at 7 PM.
