No. 18 Lewis Women’s Basketball Outlasts Northwood, 76-73

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt senior Lauren Mead (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) scored the game-winning layup with 24 seconds left in the contest to help the No. 18 Flyers' women's basketball team capture the 76-73 victory over Northwood on Sunday (Nov. 10) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
Redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) dished the pass to Mead on the block before hitting two free throws with six seconds left to seal the victory.
 
"It was a great ball game between two really good teams today," Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We had some players step up down the stretch and make some key plays for us.
 
"It was a great team win."
 
Lewis improves to 2-0 on the season while Northwood moves to 1-1 for the year.
 
Flyers' sophomore forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) led all scorers with 21 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks while Mead chipped in 14 points and five rebounds. Johnson poured in 18 points, dished out six assists and pulled down four rebounds for the Flyers.
 
In the fast paced contest, the squads exchanged their fifth tie at 62-62 with 6:38 left in the game, as Lewis junior guard Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) put in a layup. The Flyers twice built a four-point lead but the Timberwolves took a one-point lead at 73-72 with under 55 seconds in the game on a layup by Lauren Robak.
 
The Flyers then got a rebound from Brawner-Henley to kick off the fast break that led to Mead's layup on a pass from Johnson.
 
In the first half, Northwood held a 20-14 lead before the Flyers went on a 15-6 run over seven minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 35-26. Brawner-Henley led the Flyers with eight points during the run.
 
Northwood was able to cut Lewis' lead to two at halftime, 36-34, when Sarah Susan hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in the half.
 
Northwood had five players score in double-figures, led by Robak's 17 points. Sarah Susan had 15 points, while Kaitlin Susan had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Aleigha Wylie had 11 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks for the Timberwolves.
 
The Flyers return to action on Sunday (Nov. 17) when they head to Fayette, Iowa, to take on Upper Iowa. Tip-off is set for 3 PM.
