Lewis Women’s Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Win Over UW-Parkside

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) led the Flyers with 20 kills and 11 digs as the women's volleyball team defeated UW-Parkside 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-15) at Neil Carey Arena on Tuesday (Nov. 12).
 
The Flyers improve to 21-8 on the year and 14-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action while the Rangers fall to 18-11 on the season and 8-8 in league play.
 
Lewis redshirt senior setter Vivian Pritz (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) collected 10 digs while sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) tallied 14 kills and three block assists. Junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 46 assists and 17 digs. Redshirt freshman middle hitter Alesia Kroeker (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) had two solo blocks and three block assists while classmate Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had 26 digs.
 
"The team had a preseason-type of energy for senior night tonight," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "Our lone senior, Vivian (Pritz), is everything to the team.
 
"They played up for her and did what they needed to do to get the win."
 
The Flyers dropped the first set, 25-23, despite hitting .276 (18 K, 6 E, 44 TA). The Rangers tallied a .257 hitting percentage, collecting 13 kills with four errors in 35 attempts.
 
Lewis' offense woke up in the second set as sophomore outside hitter Lauren O'Brien (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and Kroeker teamed up for a block assist to push the Flyer lead to 15-7. Lewis closed out the set on a 10-5 run, capturing the game on a block assist by Vertin and sophomore middle blocker Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area). O'Brien and Cebula both tallied nine kills for Lewis.
 
The Flyers kept the momentum rolling in the third set as they scored the first seven points. Davito paced the Flyers with five kills while Yuede had 12 digs in the set victory.
 
The Rangers put up a fight in the fourth set, as the teams were knotted up at 10-all. Lewis kicked it up a gear to close out the set and the match on a 15-5 run. Vertin tallied five kills and four digs to pace the Flyer offense.
 
UW-Parkside's offense was led by Kendyl Daneleski's eight kills, four digs and four total blocks. The Rangers' libero Sarah Mlachnik collected 26 digs, while Lauren Hickson had 16 assists.
 
The Flyers travel to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield on Friday (Nov. 15) at 7 PM.
