Marquette, Mich. - The Lewis University men's basketball team played a near flawless game in their road opener against Northern Michigan on Sunday (Nov. 24) afternoon, as the Flyers shot 63.9% (23-for-36) from the field and committed just six turnovers on their way to the 78-68 regional victory over the Wildcats at the Berry Events Center.
It was the highest field goal percentage by a Flyer team in a game since Lewis shot 67.2% (41-for-61) in a 101-82 win over UW-Parkside on January 17, 2009. The six turnovers was the fewest since they had a season-low six miscues against McKendree on February 16, 2013. The 36 field goal attempts was the fewest by a Flyer squad during the
Scott Trost era.
Lewis junior
Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) led all scorers with a game and career-high 22 points on 9-for-10 shooting and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Lewis junior guard
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) added 18 points on 14-for-19 shooting from the free throw line, along with a game-high five assists. Jackson's backcourt mate
Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton) finished with 13 points and two assists, while reserve guard
Gabe Williams (Chicago, Ill./Farragut) came off the bench and drained three treys to finish with 10 points.
The Flyers got to the line early and often, as they knocked down 27-for-38 of their charity shots, while NMU managed to hit just 52.0% (13-for-25) of their attempts.
"Any win on the road is a good win," Trost said. "I thought Julian (Lewis) played outstanding and we got a big lift off of the bench from Gabe (Williams). It's nice to head into Thanksgiving undefeated!"
With the win, Lewis improves to 3-0 on the campaign, while the host Wildcats drop to 1-3 on the season.
Northern Michigan's Terry Nash led the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting, followed by 17 points and eight rebounds from junior forward Justin Newell. NMU junior forward Chavis Mattison pitched in 13 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Lewis is back in action on Saturday (Nov. 30), as the Flyers welcome Wayne State to Neil Carey Arena for a 3 PM tip-off.
