No. 10 Lewis Women’s Basketball Falls To Northern Michigan, 75-66

Marquette, Mich. – The No. 10 Lewis University women's basketball team suffered their first lost of the season at the hands of regional foe Northern Michigan 75-66 on Sunday (Nov. 24) at the Berry Events Center. 
 
The Flyers fall to 3-1 on the year while the Wildcats improve to 3-0 for the season.
 
"We didn't play with enough of a sense of urgency for a full 40 minutes," Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. "When you don't do that the result is usually not in your favor, especially against a good team like Northern Michigan."
 
The Lewis offense was led by sophomore forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), who collected her third double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds as well as three steals and two assists. Redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) collected 16 points, two assists and two rebounds while junior forward Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) pulled down nine rebounds, tallied four points and dished out two assists for the Flyers. Junior guard Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) had four assists, as well as seven points and four rebounds.
 
The Wildcats held the lead the entire game, as the Flyers struggled to find the momentum in their offense. Lewis was able to get within two points multiple times in the first half but Northern Michigan came back each time to extend their lead, including pushing it to 13 points at 34-21 with two minutes left in the half. The Wildcats took a 36-27 lead into the locker rooms.
 
Brawner-Henley paced the Flyers in the first half with 16 points while Reinhart pulled down six rebounds.
 
In the second half, Northern Michigan's lead ballooned to 16 points at 43-27 at the 17:23 mark.
 
The Flyers were able to chisel the Wildcats lead down to one point at 58-57, as Johnson completed a three-point play at the foul line at the 4:27 mark. Lewis went on a 30-15 run over 13 minutes of action with Brawner-Henley and Johnson both collecting eight points during the run.
 
The Wildcats were able to withstand the Flyers offensive surge to win the game 75-66.
 
Northern Michigan had five players in double figures. Nea Makela had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds, while Lauren Gruber collected 16 points. Alyssa Colla also chipped in 11 points while Anna Liewen and Brooke Coenen both tallied 10 points.
 
Lewis is back in action on Saturday (Nov. 30) when they head to Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich., for a 1 PM ET tip-off.
