Allendale, Mich. – Lewis University sophomore Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) collected her fourth double-double of the season on Saturday (Nov. 30) as the No. 12 women's basketball team fell 67-59 to Grand Valley State at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

The Flyers fall to 3-2 on the year while the Lakers improve to 2-1 on the season.

Despite being double teamed the whole game by GVSU, Brawner-Henley scored 13 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and matched a career-high five blocked shots for the Flyers. Redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) led Lewis with 15 points, while junior guard Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) had nine points, six assists and collected a career-high 11 rebounds. Junior guard Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) matched a career-high eight assists and scored seven points for Lewis.

"We had better energy and effort today" Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Grand Valley just made a few more plays down the stretch."

The Flyers dominated the paint, scoring 18 of their 33 first half points down low. GVSU's deeper bench provided enough of a spark for the Lakers to take a 35-33 lead into the half.

Lewis opened the second half on a 13-5 run to take a 46-40 lead at the 14:39 mark. Johnson paced the Flyers during the run with seven points, including a three-pointer.

The squads then exchanged five ties until GVSU was able to take control of the game with three minutes left in regulation as Lewis' sharp shooters went cold. The Lakers went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the waning minutes to cruise to the eight-point win.

The Lakers were led by Dani Crandall's 16 points, while Piper Tucker picked up 14 points off the bench.

The Flyers return home to Neil Carey Arena to host area rival St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday (Dec. 3) with tipoff is set for 7 PM.
