Romeoville, Ill. - Despite the absence of Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost - who was out sick - the Flyers held Saint Joseph's to a 30.2% (19-for-63) shooting performance on their way to the 69-49 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Pumas at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Feb. 2) evening.
That shooting performance was the second-worst by a Flyer opponent this season. Lewis held Judson to a 29.2% (14-for-48) outing on December 19, 2012.
"I thought it was a terrific effort in Coach Trost's absence today," Lewis assistant men's basketball coach
Adam DeMong said. "I'm pleased with the performance, but there's still some things we'd like to correct, but all in all, it was a good win."
Lewis sophomore guard
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) collected a game-high 18 points for the Flyers, including six rebounds. Senior guard
David Bryant (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) pitched in 12 points and eight rebounds, while freshman forward
Brad Foster (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) added 11 points and three blocks off the bench.
With the win, Lewis improves to 12-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play, while the Pumas fall to 5-13 on the campaign and 3-8 in GLVC action.
SJC senior forward Damon Ellison Jr. came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting, including two three-pointers for the Pumas.
The Flyers out-rebounded Saint Joseph's, 46-36, despite a 11-10 disadvantage on the offensive glass. The 46 caroms were the second most by a Flyer squad this season. The Pumas were unable to get to the line, as they uncorked 31 three-point attempts on Saturday and made only 3-of-11 charity tosses.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 7), as the Flyers head to Evansville to square off with Southern Indiana for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
